Gallery Chosun presents the exhibition of Hye Kyoung Kwon. She depicts things that can be seen in our daily life, however; these things appearing in her work become subjects rather than objects projecting her own image. When she studied abroad in Germany, she had to leave her hometown and settled in an unfamiliar environment. Through this experience, she started to think about life and its instability. For her, things are always obligated to change their own position and purpose, which can be strongly related with the matter of life and even resembles herself a lot who had to face many changes in her life.
Her work does not end in two-dimensional space because she puts her work into the actual space once more. This way of work represents her personal attitude. She does not deny or ignore reality but intensely involves in and confronts any situation she faces. Her work of reproducing things on the canvas and bringing them back into the world does not end in a change of meaning. It is a portrait of herself: a stranger moving from one culture to another, which became one of the most important concepts in her work.
In this exhibition, she introduces the process of object-recording that she worked for about two and a half years after she returned to Korea from Germany. The objects on the canvas that remain as a piece of the memory transform the exhibition space into a distribution center. Hye Kyoung Kwon draws communication from objects. She redefines her memory to become an anonymous object and repeats the process of passing the object beyond the memory again. 갤러리조선은 2018년 11월 10일부터 11월 24일까지 권혜경 작가의 개인전 를 진행한다. 권혜경은 우리의 일상 속에서 볼 수 있는 사물들의 모습을 그린다. 그녀의 작품에서 나타나는 이러한 사물들은 오브젝트로서의 객체가 아닌 서브젝트로서의 주체가 된다. 그녀는 이러한 물건들이 본인 자신의 모습을 투영하고 있다고 이야기한다. 유학생 시절, 고향을 떠나 낯선 곳에 정착하며 살아가야 했던 그녀. 시간과 상황에 따라 그 위치를 달리하는 물건은 새로운 환경에 끊임없이 적응하며 살아야 했던 권혜경 자신의 모습과도 닮아있다.
그녀의 이러한 작업은 평면의 회화 이미지에서 끝나지 않는다. 그녀는 캔버스에 옮겨진 작업을 다시 한번 실제적 공간에 배치한다. 이는 현실을 부정하거나 외면하는 것이 아니라, 그것에 더욱더 깊게 개입하며 대면하고자 하는 그녀의 작가적, 개인적 태도를 반영한다. 사물을 캔버스에 재현하고, 그것을 다시 이 세상으로 끄집어내는 그녀의 작업은 단순히 수단의 변화에서 머무는 것이 아니다. 하나의 문화권에서 다른 문화권으로 옮겨가며 이방인으로서의 정체성 속에서 고민하는 그녀의 모습 그 자체인 것이다.
이번 전시에서는 그녀가 독일에서 한국으로 귀국한 후 약 2년 반 동안 작업한 사물-기록의 과정이 소개될 것이다. 기억 속 하나의 조각이 되어 머무르는 캔버스 위의 사물들은 전시 공간을 하나의 유통센터로 탈바꿈시킨다. 권혜경은 흔히 볼 수 있는 사물로부터 소통을 끌어낸다. 본인의 기억을 재정립하였다가, 스스로 익명의 사물이 되었다가, 또다시 그 사물을 기억의 저 너머로 흘려보내는 과정을 반복한다. 이러한 시도를 통해 그녀는 시공간적 담지체로 변모한 사물들에 대한 고민을 함께 이어가고자 한다. -갤러리조선 어시스턴트 큐레이터, 홍보라
