‘Peace Culture Bunker’ is the name of the artist residency program. I stayed from September 2018 to June 2019. My studio was unit 6 where it was used as the antitank defense facilities in the past. They did not demolish part of the walls and left them to build into a unique structure with a wall made entirely of glass and two doors in front and back instead of the window. I sometimes slept at the studio since my house was far away and I could experience my private area changing into a public area in an instant because it was located near park where I could observe the visiting locals any time during the day whenever I opened the door. The noises and gazes passing between a wall made a sense of distance between me and them mas the time passed by and I lived with blinds closed and opened the door as little as possible every day. The residency that started with this pattern is now near end. The most work or the effort I have done in the past 10 months was to block the sights from outside the door and to not to communicate with residents who were curious about my studio, contrary from the residency’s original purpose. This exhibition’s work, 「A Camouflage Wall」(2019), is to reenact the parts of walls in the antitank defense facilities disappeared from unit 5 of Peace Culture Bunker due to remodeling in painting. Painting disguised as the wall will be the final output of last 10 months that I have been trying to hide and camouflage myself.

‘평화문화진지’ 이곳은 2018년 9월부터 2019년 6월까지 머물게 된 레지던시의 이름이다. 나의 작업실은 6호실이며 과거 대전차방호시설로 쓰였던 벽의 일부분을 허물지 않고 그대로 살려 리모델링된 독특한 구조로 한 벽이 통유리로 되어있고 창문대신 앞뒤로 문이 두 개가 나있다. 집이 멀었던 나는 가끔 작업실에서 자고 가기도 했는데 지역주민이 이용하는 공원에 위치한 이곳은 어느 시간이나 문을 열면 행인들을 볼 수 있는 구조라 매번 사적인 영역에서 순식간에 공공의 영역으로 바뀌는 경험을 해야만 했다. 벽 하나를 두고 오가는 소음과 시선들. 시간이 갈수록 이런 점들은 나와 그들 사이에 거리감을 두게 하였고 매일 최소한의 문을 열고 블라인드를 내리고 생활하였다. 이렇게 시작한 레지던시는 이제 입주 끝 무렵이다. 지나고 보니 10개월 동안 가장 많이 했던 일 혹은 노력은 이곳의 취지와는 다른 문밖의 시선을 차단하고 작업실에 궁금증을 가졌던 주민들과 소통하지 않으려는 노력이었다. 이번 전시 작품 「A Camouflage Wall(위장된 벽)」(2019)은 평화문화진지 5동 내부에 리모델링으로 사라진 대전차방호시설 벽의 일부분을 다시 회화로 재현해낸 일시적인 벽이다. 벽처럼 위장된 회화는 그동안 나를 숨기고 위장하기 위해 노력했던 10개월간의 최종의 결과물이 될 것이다. -권혜경
